With a current enrollment of over 5,000 students and a stellar record of international accreditation, the Caribbean Maritime University is the premier Maritime education institution in the Caribbean. It specializes in applied research and training for professional seafarers and associated industry personnel, covering land, sea and air. It trains 70% of the seafarers in the Caribbean and is an ISO 9001:2008 certified institution and the Caribbean region’s Center Of Excellence for tertiary maritime, logistics, engineering training, research and consultancy. The CMU offers degrees at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels and is recognized by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport of the United Kingdom, the International Maritime Organization, and the World Maritime University.
The CMU receives 20% of its funding from the Government of Jamaica. The balance is met through tuition and fees (which do not adequately cover cost), contributions from the Shipping Association Jamaica, customized courses and consultancies, and research and development.
The CMU has strategic partnerships with local and global institutions to expand its reach, diversify its offerings and increase awareness of the university internationally, including with the University of the West Indies, Mokpo National Maritime University of South Korea and World Maritime University in Sweden, in the fields of marine biotechnology, logistics and research.
Some of the critical needs at the CMU are:
- Scholarships and grants for students
- The upgrading and expansion of the infrastructure
- The need to continually upgrade maritime and other technology to industry standard
- Merchant training vessel
- Upscaling human resource capital and remediation resources
